Eleven area nonprofit organizations recently were presented with checks from the East Cooper Medical Center Volunteer Services Organization. Each donation was for $1,000.

Among those receiving funds were Crisis Ministries, Christian Medical Clinic at St. Andrews, East Cooper Community Outreach, Darkness to Light, Windwood Farm Home for Children, Lowcountry Orphan Relief, East Cooper Meals on Wheels, Coastal Crisis Chaplaincy, A Caring Heart: Hospice Home Care, East Cooper Habitat for Humanity and Lowcountry Red Cross "Relief for East Cooper Area Fire Victims."

The organization also funds scholarships for local students and helps provide necessary medications for those who can't afford them. Contact Shirley Nilsen at 416-6271.
