Giving
If you mention Meals on Wheels to your friends, there’s a good chance they will know someone who has received or delivered meals at some time. That’s not surprising. Meals on Wheels drivers have served our nation’s homebound residents since 1954. What many people don’t realize is that each program is independently funded and operated. Here in the Lowcountry, East Cooper Meals on Wheels is the only one serving the six communities east of the Cooper River. For the past twenty-one years, we have provided a vital lifeline for local homebound residents, bringing a safety net of personal care to their homes. Will you help us continue this much needed service in 2008?
Our recipients range in age from 40 to 101. Some need a mid-day meal for a short period of time while others depend upon us for all of their nutritional needs over the long term. Uncomfortable as the prospect may seem, any one of us – wealthy or not, elderly or in the prime of life – may one day find ourselves needing a delivered meal. It could be twenty years from now. It could be tomorrow. Consider what you might be forced to ask of your neighbors in the event of an unforeseen accident or illness. Will Meals on Wheels be your link to living in the comfort and dignity of your own home when age or illness steals your independence?
The donation form provides a variety of giving options. You may choose to directly fund daily operations, transfer stocks, or take the long view and contribute to our sustainability fund. Give a gift in memory of a loved one or make a donation in honor of someone’s birthday, anniversary or special achievement. Consider naming East Cooper Meals on Wheels as your agency of choice in an employee or United Way fund. If you choose to phone or fax your contribution, we are available five days a week from 8:00 am to 2:00 pm. The phone number is (843)881-9350 and the fax number is (843) 881-0994. You may also mail your contribution to us at P.O. Box 583, Mt. Pleasant, SC, 29465.
\Whatever your preference, you will be a key partner in our service to the East Cooper community. Your contribution of $1200 will feed a Sullivan’s Island recipient for a year or all our recipients for a day. $660 will serve a month of second meals to participants in Cainhoy and Wando. $300 will fund a route in the Groves for a week and $125 will pay for one day of meals in the Old Village.
We are planning right now for that day when you or someone you love needs a daily meal and a friendly visit. With your contribution, you are helping us prepare for our future, and possibly yours as well. John Carroll, President of Unlimited Performance, describes the partnership in this way:
…an investment in East Cooper Meals on Wheels yields a high return that isn’t matched elsewhere. Here are the facts: nobody waits (response within 24 hours of request for service), nobody wonders (85% of the budget expended on direct services), and nobody sits still for long (3.5 employees assist 220 volunteers). Here’s the bottom line: people who would otherwise go hungry have meals, those otherwise out of touch for weeks get regular visits. That makes this community a better place to live.
Please join us in serving East Cooper’s most vulnerable residents. Complete and submit the donation form. Do it today; it will ease your mind tomorrow.
