2008 EVENTS
East Cooper Meals on Wheels hosts two major fundraising events each year, a spring gala and a fall golf tournament. Together these two events raise more than a quarter of our annual budget and provide our friends and neighbors with two fabulous opportunities to wine, dine and exercise for the benefit of our most vulnerable residents.

An Evening in the Old Village … A Meal to Remember
May 15, 2008, 6:00 – 9:30 pm, Alhambra Hall in Old Mt. Pleasant
The annual gala & auction features East Cooper businesses and showcases East Cooper’s premier restaurants. Lead sponsors include Langdon’s Restaurant & Wine Bar, Mustard Seed Group, Old Village Post House, Sienna, Six Tables and Southern Wine and Spirits. It is an elegant affair with sumptuous dining and chamber music provided by junior members by the Charleston Symphony Orchestra. An open bar adds to the fun.
Past live and silent auction items included luxury appliances, furniture and accessories for the home, fine jewelry, health and fitness packages, theatre and airline tickets, LPGA tickets, original paintings and photography, glass art, and island getaways all along the coast courtesy of Resort Quest. In 2007 more than 100 businesses, 70 volunteers and 200 guests partnered with us to raise over $41,000 to benefit our recipients.
For the past ten years, East Cooper Meals on Wheels and Outback Steakhouse have hosed more than 100 golfers for a day long tournament and banquet at a celebrated East Cooper golf course.
The 2007 tournament provided 75 generous businesses and 116 golfers an afternoon of unforgettable golf that raised more than $40,000 to benefit our most vulnerable neighbors. Citadel Athletic Director Les Robinson, our tournament spokesperson, opened the event with thanks to all participants and a reminder that “hunger exists in our own neighborhoods and that’s why we’re here”. Then, with a delicious Outback Steakhouse lunch under their belts and a few mulligans in their pockets, the golfers headed out for an afternoon of friendly competition with a bit of business networking on the side. After a picture perfect day on the links, golfers and their guests were treated to a banquet was donated and staffed by Outback Steakhouse. It included delectably attractive appetizers, a choice of entrees and diet-busting desserts well worth the calories.
Every year, dream drawings and skill contests rev up the play, and jaw-dropping prizes wow the crowd after the scores come in. Each golfer receives a golf shirt and other golf related accessories.
In past years, tournament prizes have included rounds of golf at Daniel Island Club, Patriots Point, Wild Dunes, RiverTowne, Snee Farm, Charleston National and Dunes West; dining gift certificates from the Mustard Seed Group, Five Loaves Café, Dog & Duck, Kickin Chicken, and the Noisy Oyster; golf clinics at Charleston National and car washes at Liquid Highway. Tournament committee member Eddie Truesdale noted that the volunteers “did an absolutely outstanding job pulling this event off. People do not realize how valuable the people ‘behind the scenes’ truly are.” He agreed with Les Robinson who noted that the golfers “had a great time even if they didn’t play well.” Eddie added, “These same people would be willing to help again.” That’s good news for all East Cooper residents. With such strong and consistent community support, Meals on Wheels will serve East Cooper’s homebound citizens for many years to come.
See what the buzz is about. Register your team or purchase a sponsorship for our 2008 tournament by completing and submitting the tournament registration form. Enjoy a great day of golf while you make a difference in the daily lives of our homebound recipients.
